Bootstrap Breakout, March 17th, 6pmAn Entrepreneurial Survival Kit: Across the Valley of DeathThe Valley of Death: This is the period after the start up of a new venture and before it reaches a sustainable break-even point, where the new venture gains positive cash flow. A new venture in the Valley of Death, like a new born baby, relies on the resources of its founders. If a new venture is not able to cross the Valley of Death, it will die after using the capital resources at its disposal; it is as simple as this! But if a venture is able to cross the Valley of Death, it becomes resilient, like steel. Darius Mahdjoubi, a researcher at UT, will share with us some new ideas about how to cope with the harsh realities of setting up a new venture and how to take it safely out of the Valley of Death. Darius has been practicing and studying innovation and entrepreneurship in one way or another for the past 20 years. Starting in Iran in the early eighties, he faced these challenges first hand while working to help a struggling nation revitalize herself. From there, he immigrated to Canada in 1991, as a self-employed entrepreneur, to commercialize organizational innovation. He came to Austin in 2000, based on the late Dr. George Kozmetsky's suggestion, to conduct a cross-disciplinary study of Knowledge, Innovation and Entrepreneurship at UT-Austin. His wide experience and ability to cross-pollinate disparate themes help Darius see the challenges in a unique and fresh way. LOCATION: IC2
