Leadership Chef
Neal Kocurek passed away on March 29, 2004. We miss you Neal! Thank you for sharing yourself and your energy with everyone that needed or asked for it.

Neal was passionate about building leaders within companies and the community. He believed this was the single most important thing one could do. He spoke about his Leadership Recipe to all who would listen. In fact, he said that it was this recipe which enabled him to do the many amazing things he did including founding Radian, bringing the Convention Center to reality, leading St. David's, starting Envison Central Texas and solving personal challenges he faced.

Here's Neal's Leadership Recipe - we hope you can use it towards achieving your own goals, be it starting a company or anything else:

Leadership is the activity of influencing people to cooperate toward some goal which they come to find desirable (over the long haul) -Orway Tead (Neal's addition in parens)

The Recipe
#Use the miracle device (the calendar - schedule time w/ yourself!)
#Know about your Scotomas (flaws/wrong ideas) let your ideas/problems incubate
#Develop a vision of your leadership initiative
#Use Tead's definition as a guide throughout the process
#Establish the goals - make them SMART (specific, measurable, achievable,
#Use all your resources (don't underestimate the power at your fingertips)
#Listen to all parties who have interest (esp. those who are opposed to you)
#Collect, analyze and present data - again and again
#See that all parties involved/affected are educated
#Create "our idea" - get people to add their thoughts
#Use your interpersonal skills - data sells
#Remember Sir Winston: "never ever, ever ever ever...ever, ever give up!"
Bijoyhttp://www.bootstrapaustin.org/index.php?title=Main_Page&diff=8044Main Page2017-10-13T21:43:49Z
Bijoy:

Ideation involves the newly minted bootstrapper dedicating time and energy towards creating a Demo of the product, service, website, experience, cause or community they wish to offer. This stage involves finding a complementary dance partner - a cofounder - who will serve as a key collaboration partner.

There is a misplaced myth in the importance of finding investor capital during this stage. The Bootstrapper must have the discipline to avoid taking this step.

There is also a pervasive myth that bootstrappers have to have a "big idea" before they can get going. The great bootstrappers have small ideas that are are a natural outgrowth of a dedicated Preideation process and they work to get those to customers. Over time, their small ideas turn into big ones.

Similarly, the great bootstrappers do not go it alone. Understanding their Core Type, they seek out dance partners who complement their weaknesses. This is one of the key actions of the Ideation stage.

This phase is the development of the individual as they discover their core energy and passions. "MRE" refers to: Maven, Relater, Evangelist. It starts at birth and goes on for many years, usually through childhood and schooling. It is a time of preparation that culminates in a discovery that the individual realizes they are totally unique in the world. Passions are those things that the individual is interested in outside themselves - such as computers, food, art, etc.

Discovery can happen through a variety of factors including supportive parents and environment; indeed it is many times an un-supportive environment that spurs the individual towards self-discovery.

Principle
Know thyself: realize you are totally unique. Discover and deepen your passions and talents.

Subgroups are ongoing conversations organized around bootstrap stages and other topics.

Meetings
Subgroups meet, usually on a monthly basis, to help their members build community and learn. Meetings are usually 3 hours and include a social hour followed by an hour of presented content and another hour of socializing.

Current subgroups that gather their members meet on the following schedule:

*2nd Mon: Main Bootstrap Meeting
*3rd Tue: Interactive Subgroup

Online
Every subgroup has a corresponding online group (yahoo or google). You must join the online group to hear about meetings. Members also get help from each other via the online groups. Please follow the following protocols, they preserve the integrity of our online discussions. You manage your online reputation by the way you conduct yourself on the group.

Carefully read the "NOs" on the list below. If you violate these rules, you will first have your posts moderated, then lose posting privileges and finally, be removed from the list.

#No promoting your business unless in direct response to a question posed by another bootstrapper asking for help.
#No job requests unless you are filling a position for your company. If you find yourself back in Ideation and having to look for a job, check out Hire Austin and Indeed
#No questions about non-venture-related issues.
#No posts relating to "what's broken about bootstrap." Add these directly to the wiki page Suggestions to Improve Bootstrap or get in touch directly with appropriate leads.
#No political debates
#No attacking any other member. When you disagree, do so respectfully.
#Represent your needs only. A bootstrapper that needs help must be on the list.
#DO ask any question that will help you move your venture forward
#DO share resources, news, connections, information that you think will be relevant to your fellow-bootstrappers.
#DO post events you think are of interest (WITHOUT REMINDERS) to the calendar. These could also be any events that your company is putting on that you would like bootstrappers to know about.
#DO post about discounts you would like to offer to bootstrappers.

As companies evolve through the stages of Ideation, Valley of Death and Growth, they move into a sustained period where optimization and improvement of the discoveries from the first VoD occur. There comes a time, however, when large companies need to rebootstrap themselves, i.e. tap into bootstrapping as an innovation process to develop entirely new products and services. The Bootstrap Network helps large companies with internal rebootstrap efforts through its Rebootstrap Program.
